Church Committees are Instruments of the Devil
Truly, verily I say unto you, church committees are instruments of the Devil. I favor hyperbole as a technique of literature, but when I say truly, verily, you better listen to me. God created everything, so let no one lie to you and tell you that certain foods can make you spiritually dirty. They cannot. All foods submit to cleansing in the name of Nazareth's Jesus. Similarly, church committees are not inherently evil and I do not wish for my position to be misconstrued as representing the claim that they are inherently and objectively evil. But, church committees hold a unique position that opens their hearts to the hissing suggestions and primordial slithery of the ruler of this world that we affectionately call the Devil (ከይሲ). So, bless your meetings with the name of Jesus of Nazareth and eat His life-granting words.
Two Streams of Conscientiousness
1)Church Committees are in The Church. The Church is seen as the source of light. Lucifer means the light-bearer. Saint Paul warned us to be wary of even angels of light if they dare to preach different gospels than the one we know, which is Jesus Christ himself.
2)Church Committees often involve the coordination of a lot of people. As the prophet says, we must be careful that as our numbers increase our sinning does not increase as well.
We are never to forget why Adam and Eve fell from Paradise and why Judas failed to be obedient to God even as he directly learned from Him. Both are cases of invitations from the Devil (the slanderer of God's word).
Enough of me... let's eat God's word
Indeed, this is our boast, the testimony of our conscience: we have behaved in the world with frankness and godly sincerity, not by earthly wisdom but by the grace of God—and all the more toward you. For we write you nothing other than what you can read and also understand; I hope you will understand until the end— as you have already understood us in part—that on the day of the Lord Jesus we are your boast even as you are our boast.
Since I was sure of this, I wanted to come to you first, so that you might have a double favor; I wanted to visit you on my way to Macedonia, and to come back to you from Macedonia and have you send me on to Judea. Was I vacillating when I wanted to do this? Do I make my plans according to ordinary human standards (according to the flesh), ready to say “Yes, yes” and “No, no” at the same time? As surely as God is faithful, our word to you has not been “Yes and No.” For the Son of God, Jesus Christ, whom we proclaimed among you, Silvanus and Timothy and I, was not “Yes and No”; but in him it is always “Yes.” For in him every one of God’s promises is a “Yes.” For this reason it is through him that we say the “Amen,” to the glory of God. But it is God who establishes us with you in Christ and has anointed us, by putting his seal on us and giving us his Spirit in our hearts as a first installment.
But I call on God as witness against me: it was to spare you that I did not come again to Corinth. I do not mean to imply that we lord it over your faith; rather, we are workers with you for your joy, because you stand firm in the faith. ( 2 Corinthians 1:12-end)
Not every word here is wholly relevant to our current discussion, but I selected this section in its entirety for your eyes because I appreciate context. I will do my best not to throw my own dead weight baggage of experiences onto these holy words, but instead to draw out life from the words as they are written.
Exegesis
We know that those who boast should boast in the Lord, not in their might, brilliance or prettiness. Here Saul who is Paul boasts in the big grace of God that permits Paul to speak with frankness and godly sincerity. Straightforwardness is holy. I have come across myriad church committees and none of them have behaved with frankness and godly sincerity.
You and I should boast in each other. We should help each other spread the glory of the gospel, Jesus Christ of Nazareth. Instead, church committees involve people putting others' ideas down and selecting one Frankenstein hodgepodge of an idea to reign supreme and lord over the peons of the committee hierarchy. Hierarchy is only good in protecting the wisdom handed down to us by the Apostles. Otherwise, it is inefficient and pride-feeding. The people closest to the source have the best information. People hierarchically above them distort this information. As the information goes from ear to ear, we enter a desert of ears that hear.
Vacillating is the perfect word to describe church committees. The opinions (whims and caprices) of the church committees vacillate, they rest on shifting sands, they are blown by weakest of breezes et cetera.
Ordinary human standards are standards according to the flesh. They are lowly and earthly instead of spiritual. Church committees argue about finances, longitude, latitude, foods, drinks, presentation styles, size et cetera. Even worse, they worship their own hands when they ponder "but what would the fleshly standards of the bearded men in dresses and funny hats have to say about this?"
Church committees will say yes, yes and no, no to you in the same twinkle of an eye. They yes, yes to you to make you think that as a member your voice is heard, your voice is important and you have decision making power. Do not be fooled. You have no power. They want the power. My preciousssssssss... A godly committee would firmly tell you no when the answer is a no and firmly tell you yes when the answer is a yes. There is no middle ground on this issue if your goal in life is to submit to Christ. To say yes, yes and no, no to your neighbor in the same twinkle of an eye is to directly spit upon the undefiled face of God.
In the name of God the Father, His Son Jesus Christ of Nazareth and His comforting and life-granting Holy Spirit, we deny you Devil (ከይሲ) and all your creeping into our church committees. Depart from our lives immediately and never return. Amayn.
Furthermore, we must love each other.
