Exegesis of Matthew 22
All four gospel accounts are bursting at the seems with wisdom that is sweeter than McDonald's sweet tea, and more precious than bitcoin, but the gospel according to Matthew has always stuck out to me. Is there a more iconic chapter than the sermon on the mount in Matthew 5? I doubt it. But, John 3:16 is more famous as a single verse. Matthew 5, 6 and 7 coupled with Matthew 22, 23 and 24 are extra-powerful or clear to my God-given eyes. Enough of that, let's focus on Matthew 22 for now.
Matthew 22
We learn about the heaven of heavens, through a wedding feast, and find out that God has the authority to deny or accept us on whatever grounds He selects.
We learn that Caesar should get what is Caesar's and that God should get what is God's. We should pay our taxes, and never forget to pay our debt of worship of only one God and restlessly minister to the poor.
We should never doubt the resurrection of the dead, for it is the basis of all of our teachings. Without it, we are to be pitied more than anyone. The preachers that ignore this question, or daringly disbelieve it, are preaching dead sermons, and death is what their hearers shall be fed.
Jesus Christ deftly uses the scriptures that the Sadducees deem holy to correct them. We should learn from this if we ever are trying to teach a sister in Christ from a different denomination. But, to do that, we need to memorize the holy writings, and know what they mean.
We hear the two love commandments again. Love is the whole message of God, but we should definitely unpack that, and know that it is a sacrificial love.
We should put God before all, and others before ourselves.
Jesus Christ also illustrates His divinity through the writings of the prophet and leader David. Respect the Old Testament (Hebrew Bible), and use it preach the good news of Christ.
