Give Thanks & Eat Ezekiel & Genesis
I don't know Hebrew, yet, but I go to great lengths with my ignorance to grasp at and reach for the Hebrew at every moment that I can. This has lead to picking up a few crumbs of wisdom along the path. Here are the words of the scroll of instruction given to Ezekiel by the Lord of Scripture.
he said to me, o groundlingson, eat what is offered to you; eat this scroll (of instruction), and go, read-aloud to the house of israel. so i opened my mouth and he gave me the scroll to eat. he said to me, groundlingson, eat this scroll that i give you and fill your stomach with it. then i ate it; and in my mouth it was as sweet as honey.
I took some liberties with the NRSV and the WordProject's Amharic Bible to quote Ezekiel 3. Speaking I translated as the liturgical act of reading-aloud. The KJV calls benadam the son of man, and the NRSV calls benadam mortal. Although mortal sounds both epic and funny, I'm wary of its latinized platonic undertones and/or overtones reminiscent of the soul.
I got the Semitic cognate nefs (nefesh) tattooed on me eons ago in Ethiopia, with a syollgism of my own construction. Woe to me. At the time, my thoughts were polluted with the armchair abstractions of Platonism rather than made holy by the practical instruction of Semitic wisdom. Thankfully, since I selected Amharic as the tattoo's tongue, the rules bound my ability to translate a strange saying. I understood nefs to be soul. This eternal, immortal, pre-primeval entity unto itself. Kyrie eleison, lord have mercy. Now I understand nefs to be a lifebreath, or breath of life, that animates me and originates in the nostrils of the Lord as we see in the beginning (Genesis) chapter 2 verse 7.
then the Lord God formed a groundling from the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and the groundling became a lifebreath
