Oreet in Hebrew and Ge'ez and Amharic
Taken from my twitter account:
"met an orít/oreet today. was expecting them to be habesha but had an inkling they might be a hebrew speaker. they turned out to be the latter, and we had a lovely convo ‘bout #hebrew, #ethiopic (ge’ez) , & #amharic
oreet is synonymous with the pentateuch in ge’ez & amharic. oreet ze lidet/fittret is genesis and oreet ze dagim is deuteronomy and so on and so forth. but, in isolation i never knew what this term meant.
oreet in hebrew means light. this shed’s light on the ge’ez editors’ intentions in translating the first five books of the hebrew bible. their titles translated into english would be as follows:
the light of the creation, the light of the exodus, the light of the levites, the light of the numbers, and the light again."
If you see me irl, please push me to hurry up and finish my transliteration and translation of genesis, aka the light of creation, from Ge'ez to English. It will cover the first four chapters, and perhaps the expanded version will cover the first eleven chapters. And perhaps the expansion of the expansion will be a commentary on the whole book.
