Reading & Hearing List
A Sunday School student of mine was being chastised by another for his Mon-Sat menu of ‘Christian’ speakers to hear with ears that hear. I think I have written about this before, at least on Twitter, but couldn’t find it here. So, here I am, to repeat my recommendations of who to read and who to hear.
As a deacon in good standing with his bishop in the Afroasiatic Orthodox communion, I will only wholeheartedly recommend content from our ‘side’. But, there is much edifying content to be found amongst the East Syriac, Greeks, and Latins. Less, but still edifying content, can be found amongst the Anglo-Saxons.
Obviously, begin with my bible study podcast. Any order works, but feel free to start at the beginning and go forward, or the end and go backwards as an homage to Tarantino. Tewahido Bible Study.
Then, see Southern California & Alaska. Then, our East Coast brethren and sistren.
Then, the Greeks in audio and text.
Then, the Latins.
Then, the Anglo-Saxons N.T. Wright, Tim Mackie, Michael Heiser.
These are all in 2021. If you’re really Orthodox, you’ll want to dig through the annals of history and tradition. I’ll shorten your search by recommending: John Chrysostom, Ephrem the Syrian, Jacob of Serugh, Gregory of Narek, and Jared the Aksumite. Read everything they have ever written first, then everything that has ever been written about them.
If you still have time left, and you shouldn’t, read Isaac the Syrian, and ignore what he says about the salvation of all. He’s dead wrong on that subject, but fantastic elsewhere. Enjoy.
