Responding to Facebook Inquiries into the Truth (Jesus)
Jesus is referred to as 'Everlasting Father' in Isaiah...does that mess with anyone else's theology? Kinda like Jesus calling us all 'gods.' (my friend's inquiry)
Verses in Question
For a child has been born for us,
a son given to us;
authority rests upon his shoulders;
and he is named
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. (Isaiah 9:6)
Jesus answered, “Is it not written in your law, ‘I said, you are gods’? (John 10:34)
My Response
Government is a bad translation (someone posted Isaiah 9:6 with a translation I thought was inappropriate)... it should be authorit(ies)y or power(s). Jesus is our father. So is our biological father. So is Saint Paul as he writes in the scriptures. So are you to youth in your parish. The term father is functional, but God the Father is at the top of the father foodchain. The Father of Fathers, if you will, even if you won't.
"You are gods," refers to theosis (becoming more God-like). At Golgotha and Calvary Christ's blood cleansed us and made us righteous. But, that's not the end of the road. That was just the beginning. Until our last breath, or His Second Coming (Judgment Day) we have to have good thoughts, good words and good deeds. We can't do this alone, so we beg Him for His grace. Day by day, we reduce our sin count, and become holier and more perfect as He is holy and perfect. Maybe, He will count us among His sheep rather than His goats, on His right side rather than on His left side, in the Heavenly Jerusalem and not outside.
Ezekiel 16 & Jonah 3:9 & Amos 5:14-15 & Zephaniah 2:3 & Matthew 25:31-46 & Luke 3:7-14 & 1 Corinthians 15:1-2 & Colossians 1:21-23 are very clear on this subject, but the entire Bible spits this truth.
I hope that my responses on Facebook or social media are edifying for all of my sistren and brethren that come across them. If not, may the Lord God Almighty rebuke and admonish me immediately.
Grace be with you all.
Furthermore, we must love each other.
