The Internet, The Word, and The Gildedmouth
The Internet has brought previously insuperable barriers to the Bible to their knees. You can read the Bible for free in God knows how many tongues. I can read the American language, Spanish, Amharic and Ge'ez. The latter with the least amount of comprehension. There are free bibles for all of these languages on the Internet.
Saint John Chrysostom (Gildedmouth) beseeches all Christians to read the Word of God, and know it better than the fading fads of their eras.
It is ridiculous if he who professes to be a Christian is unable to utter a word in defense of his own faith... It is this that prevents the pagans from quickly realizing the absurdity of their error. Inasmuch as, relying on falsehood, they make every effort to obscure the baseness of their teachings, while we whom are the guardians of Truth, cannot even open our mouths, what will prevent them from despising the great weakness of our doctrine? Will they not get the idea that our teaching is deceitful and foolish? Will they not blaspheme Christ as a dissembler and deceiver who makes us of the stupidity of the majority to advance his deceit? And we are responsible for this blasphemy if we are not willing to be on the alert to speak in defense of righteousness, but rate such matters as superfluous, and concern ourselves with earthly things. To be sure, an admirer of a dancer or of a charioteer or of a contender against wild beasts runs every risk and makes every effort so as to not come off bested in disputes concerning his favorite. Moreover, these men string together long commendations, building up a defense against those who find fault in them, casting countless jibes at their opponents. But, when arguments are proposed about Christianity they all bow their heads, and rub them and yawn, and when laughed at, withdraw. Now are you not deserving of unmitigated anger if Christ appears less honored among you than a dancer? For while you have thought up countless defenses of their deeds - even though all of these are somewhat base - you do not even exert yourself to give any thought and care to the wondrous deeds of Christ. (from the seventeenth Homily on the Gospel of John)
Who are the dancers, if not the celebrities on Dancing With The Stars, or indeed all celebrities whom are gawked at, lusted at, stalked, hagiographed and worshiped? Who are the charioteers, if not the NASCAR drivers and Olympic swimmers, runners, bobsledders et cetera? Who are the contenders against wild beasts, if not the UFC heavyweights, boxing champions of the world, WWE phenoms and the show Man versus Wild?
Saint John Gildedmouth's congregants had to pay large percentages of their incomes to afford even one book of The Bible. With the Internet and the Gedions, what tolerable excuse do we have to not read the Word of God everyday? Though this question is rhetorical, I will answer it to obliterate confusion. None, zilch, nada.
Everyday, read the Bible, read the Fathers, meditate on His ordinances and add to the faith your ideas, which are in line with the Church. This will edify the image of our God, Christ Jesus, and offend the world.
